2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Review, Pricing, and Specs
The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is comfortable.
Overland is a popular style of travel in the United States. This word refers to the travel culture of sleeping in a car. Jeep has announced the Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept, creating a lot of buzz. The model was widely unveiled at an annual fan event called the “Jeep Easter Safari” held in Moab, Utah, USA, in early April 2023.
The Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept is a specification based on the new Grand Wagoneer, a large SUV equipped with features such as a rooftop tent. The rooftop tent can be accessed from inside the car, and I’m sure many people think, “I want to travel while camping in this car!”
The Grand Wagoneer is a famous luxury SUV in the United States, with a total length of 5.45 meters and three rows of seats. This is a higher-end model than the Grand Cherokee L sold in Japan. In terms of size, its rivals would be the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. By the way, the reason it has yet to be introduced in Japan is because there is no right-hand drive version, according to the importer Stellantis Japan.
Let’s get back to the Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept. Jeep’s design team, led by Head of Design Mark Allen, removed the seats from the second row and made the floor flat. A carpet was laid there to make it look like a living room. In the United States, you often see young people lounging around on the floor at airports, so the design suits that kind of taste.
The construction is solid, and the size is generous. It’s 6 feet long (approximately 180 cm) from front to back, and it’s energized, so it’s convenient because it has lights, air conditioning, and a USB socket (Type-A) for power supply.
For example, when camping in the woods, you can go up there and relax at night. Making a rooftop tent aims to protect yourself from poisonous insects and snakes. However, since the roof needs to be strong unless the car is designed with rooftop tents in mind, there is a risk that the roof will dent, the tent will collapse, or something terrible will happen.

The model I drove was a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder gasoline twin-turbo engine called the Hurricane. It has a maximum output of 500hp (US style) and a maximum torque of 691Nm. It is combined with the latest 4WD system. We didn’t just put a rooftop tent on top this time and changed the interior. It combines 18-inch wheels with 35-inch, super-large-diameter tires to traverse even rocky terrain.
“35-inch tires are not available on the market in the first place, so they are custom-made for this car. The wheelhouse was also carved out for that purpose.” That’s what the Jeep product designer told me when I drove through a rocky area called “Red Rock,” who guided me through the course from the seat next to me.
This large-diameter tire with thick sidewalls has great traversing ability and does not slip even on rocky terrain. I gripped the rock’s surface firmly, pulled up the large body of the car, and pushed it up. However, since the Grand Wagoneer was initially developed as a comfortable people mover, it is undoubtedly worse on rough roads than a Wrangler.
The approach, breakover, and departure angles are inferior to the Wrangler. I had to be more careful while driving so the car wouldn’t get stuck on the rough roads.

Still, thanks to the large diameter tires, the vehicle height has been raised by 1.5 inches, making it a specification unique to an American who loves off-roading, and I was able to enjoy the drive with its strong torque. I usually live in the city, but on my days off, I climb up Moab’s Red Rocks and camp in extremely unusual rocky conditions. This is a proposal for a car that provides that kind of fun.
When you think of a large Jeep in Japan, it’s probably the Grand Cherokee. Among them, the Grand Cherokee L has a body length of 5200mm and a wheelbase of 3090mm and can seat 6/7 people.
Thanks to the 3.6-liter V6 engine with a maximum output of 210kW and a maximum torque of 344Nm, you can experience powerful driving on Japanese roads. Many people in the United States wonder whether to go for the Grand Cherokee L or the slightly more extensive and powerful Grand Wagoneer.
The mass-produced Grand Wagoneer is considered to have the highest position among Jeep models. The interior is luxurious and luxurious. All the equipment is included, and the second-row seats recline electrically. It has plenty of power, excellent straight-line performance, and reduces fatigue no matter how far you drive, so it’s no wonder people are considering camping in remote areas.
