As mentioned several times in this series, Ferrari’s V8 mid-engine models have evolved significantly every two generations since the original 308. 308/328→348/F355→360 Modena/F430, as introduced so far. The 458 Italia introduced here is a new generation model that has completely changed from the previous generation F430.

The car name 458 refers to the engine displacement and number of cylinders (that is, the 4.5L 8-cylinder model), which is one of the ways Ferrari names cars. It was given the name “Italy”. The world premiere was held at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The body design is, of course, Pininfarina.

The power unit mounted vertically mid-ship behind the cockpit is a newly designed 4.5L (4497cc) 90-degree V-8 DOHC, the first Ferrari road car to achieve the maximum output rotation speed. This was achieved at 9000rpm. The compression ratio is 12.5, the maximum output is 570ps, and the 127ps per liter is impressive for a naturally aspirated engine. The maximum torque of 540Nm is also generated at 6000rpm, and 80% of the maximum torque is generated from 3250rpm.

Like conventional Ferrari engines, it also features a variable valve timing mechanism, achieving a maximum speed of over 325 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.4 seconds, which is a high performance that surpasses the V12 Ferrari of a while ago.

Ferrari 458 specifications

Like the F430, the aluminum chassis made by Alcoa has evolved further. Still, the design of the body skin, which is also made of aluminum, has air outlets unique to midships that are placed in an inconspicuous area behind the side windows. It feels new, and its aerodynamics are highly calculated.

Aluminum parts extend to the suspension arms, and although it is slightly larger than the F430, the weight is kept at 1380 kg. Brembo made the brakes, and the rotors were made of ceramic carbon.

At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the open model 458 Spider (no Italian surname) was unveiled. Instead of the previous soft top, it was the world’s first mid-engine two-seater to feature an electrically operated hard top.

Both Italian and Spider models were also available with right-hand drive in Japan. In addition, the 458 Speciale, which had an increased engine output of 605ps, was announced in 2013.
